책임

우리는 모든 일에 책임이 있다.
지나간 사랑에도 우리의 책임이 있고,
떨어진 꽃입 하나에도 우리의 책임이 있다.
혹자는 성난 얼굴로 돌아보라하고 혹자는 성난 얼굴로 돌아보지 말라한다.
우리는 궂이 성난 얼굴을 하지 않더라도
우리가 한 일에 대해 돌아 볼 필요가 있다.
한밤 중에 잠을 이루지 못한다면 그것은 무언가 잘못 된 일에 대한 책임일 것이고
지난 날을 돌이킬때 나도 모를 씁쓸한 웃음이 지어진다면
그것은 무언가 부끄러웠던 일에 대한 책임일 것이다.
세상은 모든 것들은 톱니바퀴처럼 맞물린 채
서로의 꼬리를 물고 돌고, 또 돌고
어느 하나 온전하게 혼자 일 수 없는 세상에서
우리는 태어나 숨 쉰 것 자체만으로 무거운 굴레를 지고 있는 것이다.

그리고 문득 늦은 혹은 이른 시간 생각해 본다.

꼬여버린 매듭 하나하나가 누구에게도 전가할 수 없는
결국 스스로의 잘못이자 책임인 것이다.

동갑내기 친구 중 유난히 친절한 '그녀'가 있었다.
스스로 앞가림을 하지 못하던 나이의 나에게 그리고 내 또래의 철없는 아이들에게
그녀는 어느 시절인가 읽었던 위인전 속의 마더 테레사 같은 여자고
세상도 이러한 그녀의 조숙한 헌신에 많은 박수를 보냈지만
내가 나이를 먹고
또 내 또래가 나이를 먹고
제대로 되지 않았을지 몰라도 스스로 생각이라는 것을 할 수 있게 되자
우리는 어린시절의 그녀를 잊고
심지어 한자리에 모여선 그녀를 오지랖퍼라 폄하하는 지경에 이르게 되었다.
인간이란 얼마나 간사한 동물인가.
나이가 조금 들었다는 이유로
나이를 조금 더 먹었을 뿐인 아이들의 변덕에
어제의 마더 테레사가 오늘의 오지랖퍼가 되어버렸다.
